RE: GM lost 15.5B last quarter - Here's an idea!

Doug 4.7, that is precisely it.
In the years immediately after World War 2, the US was essentially the only industrial nation that had a fully functioning industial base. Being the only game on the planet quickly led to huge monopolies. GM, US Steel, etc, got lazy because no matter what they turned out, they were pretty much the dominant player, and what they said, went. The union could demand whatever it wanted, and without serious competition, the costs were just passed along.
I don't blame a union for squeezing a great deal. I've worked too many years in a field that is mostly non-union and exempt from labor laws.
I lay the blame squarely on the management that utterly failed its responsibility to exercise the necessary leadership at those companies. That's why they get the big checks and bonuses.
It is NOT 1947. Them days is done, and if the labor and managment of the troubled companies doen't wake up to that soon, then they deserve to die off.
Iacocca pulled that off at Chrysler a few decades ago: yet how quickly they forget.

RE: GM lost 15.5B last quarter - Here's an idea!

Vancamper, I have to disagree somewhat. If it were not for the unions todays American and yes Canadian workers would also be making 5 dollars a day.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong....but: Toyota is not a union auto maker, they have no problem finding labor and pay good wages. They have a very high rating of reliability. They aren't in financial trouble.
The Big 3 auto makers are union shops, paying probably way too much for menial tasks and are all in trouble.
I took the Corvette factory tour about 3 years ago and was shocked at the laid back attitude of the assembly line workers....sitting around and every now and then getting up, putting down a doughnut and adding a part to the moving assembly line. A trained chimp could do 90% of their tasks and the assembly line would move at five times the speed.
There's no doubt the UAW secured some pretty fat contracts for the rank and file: contracts that add a quite a bit to the price of the cars. However, the fat cats upstairs agreed to those contracts, and voted themselves even bigger pay and perks to compensate for the fact the hourly workers were actually making a living wage.
Both Management and the unions are going to have to go back to square one and realize that it is no longer 1947. Both are going to have to give quite a bit it the company is going to survive. Pity the blue collar worker who loses big time when the plant closes for good, but where does the money come from to bonus out and golden parachute the big dogs?
Toyota has a completely different view of it's employees: they're not the enemy. Toyota (and many others) have a total team concept that is utterly lacking at the former "Big Three". In the US plants, the line worker is to be distrusted and despised.

RE: GM lost 15.5B last quarter - Here's an idea!

No.
I believe that Exon's Mgmt. is smarter at making a profit then GM. Plus I worked at GM for 20 years and their failure now is a result of their promoting people beyond their capability.
Sounds like the "Peter Principle.":B
The Peter Priciple is alive and well at most of the bigger companies.
That's nothing new.
What's killing GM, Ford, and Chrysler is the grossly overpaid CEO's that never once looked farther than the next few quarters profit when making their "Business Plan". Built too many SUV's for waaay too long for the quick and easy profits (and fat bonuses ) instead of reacting to the handwriting on the wall the way their competitors did.
I hate to see them go, but if Darwinism is to ever be believed, it might as well start with the corporately stupid.

RE: Generator in the basement?

Generators in any RV are required, by law, to be in a metal fireproof enclosure that is properly vented with an external exhaust pipe. What he is doing is very dangerous! He can get carbon monoxide fumes (the silent killer) inside the coach and the gasoline fumes can be ignited that will cause a major fire. Encourage him to cease the practice before it is too late!
Hayes
Ditto.

RE: Bad gas must be common !

With the introduction of ethanol to the gas mix here in California, the odds of finding a "gallon of water" in anybody's car tank is almost impossible, unless somebody deliberately sabotaged that particular persons car.
Ethanol and water are pretty good companions: the water is "absorbed" by the alcohol up to a point. After that you get a gooey, milky substance instead of blended alcohol. Makes one heck of a mess in a engines EFI plumbing.
It would take a few hundred gallons of water of water in a stations storage tank to fully contaminate it out. Out here the vast majority of storage tanks are 12,000 or larger: many Arco AM/PM's have 2 or 3 of these tanks plumbed together just for their 87 octane storage.

RE: Bad gas must be common !

First unless it's a "Big Engine" it should be able to run on just about anything from pure gas to pure Alcohol.
2nd. If you can siphon a pint of that fuel and turn it over to the state inspectors, They can confirm it's been adulterated and if you also tell 'em where you bought it.. They can harass the station.
Think colonoscopy level harassment
They can only use fuel they personally pull from the stations pump or lift from its storage tanks. Lotsa fines though.

Call the Department of Weights and Measures and complain about the station. You may be surprised.

RE: The smoke is back

Can't breathe the air, but at least the smoke does provide a bit of shading from the sun...kind of.
It's supposed to be 105 today, and hotter the rest of the week. You can believe I've been praying for all those exhausted fire crews. Hope the rest of you are too, 'cause they can use them.

I am smarter than the average person that took the test, but I bet most RVers are smarter than the average.
I'd agree to that!

RE: Mods: Suggested Action For certain Subjects

What engine is better:
A Ford Powerstroke or a Dodge Cummings
That's a no-brainer.
Everyone knows it's a Chevy Dura-Max!!
I thought the aluminum Chevy Vega engine should be in the running: Mine never stopped dieseling 'till I sledge-hammered the carb.
..or is that the same thing?

RE: Sun or Shade??

Shade is preferable. It's much easier on the exterior finish and the like. Personally I believe that the reduced interior temperatures from being stored in the shade adds to the life of fabric, finishes, and glues.

RE: Window Air Conditioner

There are smaller roof units that will fit the vent opening. There are 9000 BTU units - like the Polar Cub - that would have the least amount of guesswork in istallation. That would be the most professional looking.
